Training course on Environmental Reporting in Berlin

Professional journalists working for print and online media, from Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Zambia with a minimum of four years practice, can now apply for the "Environmental Reporting" course of the International Institute for Journalism (IIJ) of GIZ – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH.

The course, which is scheduled to hold in the IIJ premises at Stresemannstraße 92, 10963 Berlin, Germany from June 21 to August 17, 2012, seeks to equip participants with new skills for reporting on environmental issues, as well as getting them to be familiar with the most common and urgent environmental issues in the society. The course is hinged on the important role journalists play in the combat to preserve the world's rain forests, especially the irresponsible dumping of toxic waste.

The course content is structured to provide insight on environment and development journalism, with focus on ecology, economy and society in the information age; objectives, principles and instruments in implementing environmental policies; protection of water, soil and air with emphasis on sources of pollution and important harmful substances; agriculture and the environment with emphasis on sustainable utilisation of natural resources; climate change and global warming with emphasis on the debate on causes and effects, the Kyoto protocol and approaches to solve the climate dilemma; renewable energy with emphasis on potentials, technical and socio-economic aspects; the permanent challenge with emphasis on access to water and sanitation; land degradation with emphasis on the extent, effects and combat against desertification and research on environmental issues.
