Probe Panel Set up to Investigate Allegations Against Chief Justice of Nigeria

A five-man panel to investigate allegations of misconduct levelled against Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), and Justice Ayo Salami, President of the Court of Appeal(PCA), has been set up.

The panel, which has Justice Umaru Abdullahi, a former PCA, as the chairman, has been given two months to investigate the petitions against them. Other members of the panel, include, Emmanuel Ayoola; D. O. Edozie; M. E. Akpiroroh; and Rakiya S. Ibrahim.

In a statement made available by Danladi Halilu, secrectary of the National Judicial Council (NJC), the council denied suspending the two justices involved, from the council. According to the release:

“After considering all the petitions and the comments by the CJN and Chairman of the National Judicial Council, President of the Court of Appeal, and other Justices of the Court, the council constituted a panel to investigate the allegations contained in the petitions with the following jurists as members...In view of the number of the petitions involved and the gravity of the allegations contained therein,  the council gave the panel a time-frame of two months within which to submit its report...contrary to the media publications, the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria and Honourable President of the Court of Appeal were not suspended as members of council."

Meanwhile, the statement also noted that Justice Salami had withdrawn the suit filed concerning the advice by the Federal Judicial Service Commission recommending him for appointment to the Supreme Court and the letter indicating he did not wish to be considered for the appointment.
