The Commissioner Police in the state, Mr Seidu Madawaki, announced this at a news conference in Lokoja on Wednesday shortly after visiting the scene of the murder.
Madawaki said the police was already combing the vicinity and the surrounding villages for the perpetrators.
He said Edimeh, who was until his murder, the traditioanl ruler of Ojikpadala-Egume in Dekina Local Government Area, was killed by assailants at about 9.30p.m. on Tuesday along with former Chairman of the community's vigilance group, Mr Yusuff Wada.
Madawaki said Edimeh was kidnapped from his house and taken a few metres away to a spot on Ankpa highway where he was shot to death.
Madawaki said, "Yusuff was shot dead while observing his night Islamic prayer in front of his house."
He said Edimeh’s corpse had been deposited in a mortuary while the blood stained prayer mat of Yusuff had been recovered by police.
Edimeh was the producer of the popular Democracy In Action on the FRCN in Kaduna and retired in 2005 as Zonal Director, Abuja National station.
He was installed the Amana Attah Ojikpadala Egume in 2003, a position he held until his death.
The Commissioner of police said full investigation was underway to ascertain the motive behind the killing of the veteran journalist.
He said Edimeh had in 2013 reported a case of threat to his life to the police.
The state council of NUJ described the assassination as barbaric and heartless.
The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Ali Atabo in a statement, said Edimeh was one of the finest broadcast journalists the country had ever produced, describing his death as very painful.
Atabor charged security agencies to go after the killers with a view to bringing them to justice.
