There was pandemonium Sunday night at Adogo in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State when unknown gunmen bombarded the police station with dynamite.
The assailants were reported to have targeted the armoury with the intention of stealing arms.
A source who spoke on condition of anonymity indicated that heavy gunfire was heard from the direction by 8.30pm.
According to him, the mufti-clad hoodlums swooped on the station and met stiff resistance from the police and military reinforcement from Lokoja.
“They used dynamite to blow up the armoury but did not succeed in carting away firearms and no casualty was recorded,” he disclosed.
A state issued by the Kogi State Police Command and signed by its Public Relations Officer, ASP Elvis Aguebor, confirmed the incident, adding that the unknown gunmen were repelled by its officers.
He urged the public to report anybody seen with bullet wound of any sort to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
“About 2100hrs of date (21/9/2014), unknown gunmen unleashed heavy attack on Adaogo Police Station, in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State, apparently desirous of carting away police arms.
“The policemen on duty swiftly took position and returned fire. The heavy dynamite launched by the attackers demolished and set fire on part of the station.
“The desire of the hoodlums to cart away arms was aborted, as the police successfully evacuated the arms from the station to safety. As at the time of this report, no human casualty was recorded on the part of the police, while some of the hoodlums escaped with bullet wounds,” the statement read.
