FRSC convicts 38 in Ogun
The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, in Ota, Ogun State, on Friday said its Magistrate Mobile Court convicted 38 offenders for various traffic offences.
This is contained in a statement by FRSC Unit Commander, Mr. Leye Adegboyega, made available to newsmen in Ota.
Adegboyega said 44 offenders were arraigned, but the court presided over by Magistrate Olayinka Idowu, discharged and acquitted six people.
He said the offenders were arrested for various traffic offences ranging from driving licencing, seatbelt, and tyre violations as well as driving with shattered windscreen.
“The commission has mandated that the traffic offenders should be prosecuted in court to serve as deterrent to other road users, especially this period of ’ember months.’
“And one of commission’s strategic goals is the enforcement of road traffic laws and regulations through prosecution of offenders in mobile court.
“The mobile court was set up as part of the steps to reduce road crashes as well as creating safer environment for the Nigerian roads as the year ends,” Adegboyega said.
He further said that the FRSC was determined to reduce crashes on Nigerian roads by 20 per cent and fatality by 30 per cent.
The unit commander urged the public to cooperate with the FRSC and imbibe the culture of road discipline, noting that crashes could be reduced if traffic laws and regulations were obeyed.
“We need to do everything possible to reduce the menace of preventable accidents on our roads amidst the growing spate of crashes involving articulated vehicles,” he said.
Adegboyega also implored the motorists not to overspeed or overload their vehicles, and noted that some of the crashes could be traced to driver’s attitude, recklessness and indiscipline.
