FG shocked at Agatu killings, promises to bring culprits to justice

The Federal Government has said it received with shock the sad news of incessant attacks on innocent Nigerians in Agatu and other communities in Benue State.

 

Interior minister, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd) disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists.

 

The statement which referred to the attackers as “unknown gunmen”, added that government “has vowed to mobilize security forces to decisively deal with the perpetrators of these dastardly acts”.

 

Press Secretary to the minister, Osaigbovo Ehisienmen in the statement, said Mr Dambazau had earlier directed the Inspector General of Police to carry out on the spot assessment of the situation in the communities.

 

According to him, the minister “noted that perpetrators of these dastardly acts are unwittingly testing the will and capabilities of government security forces.

 

While expressing his condolence to the government and people of Benue State over these highly reprehensible acts, he noted that to guarantee the security and welfare of the people as enshrined in section II, subsection (2b) of 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria remains the primary purpose of government”.

 

He said government has further directed the Inspector General of Police and other Heads of Security Agencies under the Ministry to synergize with other security services to speedily arrest this ugly trend and bring its perpetrators to justice.

 

No fewer than 500 people across eight communities have been killed and over 10,000 displaced following herdsmen invasion of eight communities in Agatu local government area of Benue state.
