Abuja Labour Party to protest party's convention held in Akure

Mr Felix Ashimole, FCT Chairman, Labour Party, says a peaceful protest would be carried out by its FCT chapter to denounce the party's National Convention held in Akure, Ondo state.

He made this known while meeting with the members of the party in Gwagwalada on Saturday in Abuja.

Ashimole said that the FCT chapter would soon march to the Nigeria Labour Congress head office for the peaceful protest, adding that the convention which was held in on Oct. 11 was illegal and unconstitutional.

He said that article 13 of the party's constitution was not followed as expected-- it specifies that each state should provide 20 members to attend its convention.

"The article made the number of people to attend from each state clear, but this was not followed at the national level.

"We were asked to nominate only 12, both executive and members, which is unacceptable and unconstitutional; some of the exco members did not go, while some attended," he said.

He also faulted the new office of the former chairman of the party, Mr Dan Nwanyanwu, as Chairman, Board of Trustee (BOT), noting that the party's constitution did not make any provision for such a post.

"Chief Dan elected himself as the BOT chairman of the party during the convention; we do not have BOT in our party constitution that has existed since 2009.

"It is in the proposed amendment of the constitution that BOT was considered, and there was no condition for who shall be BOT chairman, only members were listed."

He said that Labour Party Youths do not and shall not recorgnise the product of the "purported National Convention and imposters masquerading as National Leaders of the party".
