Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 25, also referred to as the "Underwear Bomber" has been sentenced to life in prison by a federal judge in Detroit, United States.

Abdulmutallab, Nigerian, had pleaded guilty to trying to blow up a U.S. airliner bound for Detroit, December 25, 2009. He hid the bomb in his underwear, and though was unable to successfully blow up the Delta Airlines flight carrying 289 people, caused a fire to breakout in the U.S. airliner.

District Judge Nancy Edmunds, while reviewing charges brought against Abdulmutallab, said, "The defendant has never expressed doubt or regret or remorse... he sees mission as divinely inspired and a continuing obligation." The judge thereafter, based on the evidences before the court, including testimonies of some people on board, sentenced him to life in prison. He gets consecutive life terms on four charges.

Meanwhile, Anthony Chambers, Abdulmutallab's lawyer has expressed his intention to appeal the ruling before the allowed 10days expires.
