04/01/2011 15:34

Governor Salman Taseer, of the Punjab province, of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, has been shot dead by one of his own body guard, Tuesday, January 4, 2011. One of his own elite security force protectors was reported to have opened fire on him, as he was moving towards his car in Kohsar Market, in Pakistan.

Taseer, was reported to have got down of his car at the market, which is popular for Westerners and well-to-do Pakistanis, when he was shot dead by his guard, resulting in blood splatters around the Kohsar shopping center.

Taseer, who is a senior member of the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP), had in recent times, spoken out against Pakistan's blasphemy law. His action had sparked protests by Islamists. His point of view, was believed to be in support of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman, who was sentenced by a lower court to death, for violating Pakistan's lawas against blaspheming Muhammad.

The accused bodyguard, Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, has been arrested, after confessing to committing the murder. He admitted committing the crime, because of Taseer's stance on the blasphemy law.
